How Long Does Appliance Installation Take? A Realistic Timeline for Every Appliance

Real time estimates for appliance installation — dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, dryer, range, and more. What affects the timeline and how to prepare.

How Long Does Appliance Installation Take? A Realistic Timeline for Every Appliance

One of the most common questions I get before a job: “How long is this going to take?”

It’s a fair question. You’ve got a window for a delivery, a day you took off work, a spouse waiting at home. You want to know if this is a 30-minute job or a three-hour ordeal.

Here’s my honest answer — by appliance.

Quick Reference: Installation Time by Appliance

ApplianceTypical TimeWhat Can Extend It
Dryer (electric, replacing old unit)20–30 minVent cleaning, cord upgrade (3→4 prong)
Dryer (gas)30–45 minLeak test time, old flex connector replacement
Washer20–30 minHose replacement, drain standpipe issues
Dishwasher (replacement)45–90 minOld unit corroded, supply line replacement
Refrigerator (no ice maker)15–25 minTight kitchen, door panel removal
Refrigerator (with ice maker hookup)30–45 minWater line access, new shutoff needed
Electric range (freestanding)20–30 minNew anti-tip bracket, drawer removal
Gas range (freestanding)30–50 minNew flex connector, leak test
Over-the-range microwave60–120 minStud location, old exhaust fan demo, duct work
Wall oven (replacement)90–150 minCut-out size check, junction box access
Cooktop (replacement)45–90 minCountertop cut-out fit, gas/electric match
Garbage disposal30–60 minOld disposal removal, drain plumbing fit

Why Times Vary

Installing a dryer into the same spot as the old dryer, with an existing 240V outlet and a clean vent? Twenty minutes, maybe less.

Installing a dishwasher where there was never a dishwasher before? That’s a different job entirely — it requires running a water supply line, a drain line, and a dedicated electrical circuit. Now you’re talking half a day and multiple trades.

Most residential replacements (same appliance, same location) fall in the 30–60 minute range. The exceptions are OTR microwaves and wall ovens, which involve more mechanical work regardless of conditions.

What Actually Slows Down a Job

The old appliance. A dryer that’s been in the same spot for 15 years has lint-packed vents, possibly a corroded exhaust elbow, and a 3-prong cord on a new 4-prong outlet. Any of that needs to be addressed before the new unit goes in.

Tight spaces. Refrigerators in tight galley kitchens. Dishwashers in cabinets with no wiggle room. OTR microwaves where the upper cabinet needs to come down to get the unit in position. Physical space constraints add real time.

What we find when we pull the old unit. Water damage under the dishwasher. A gas flex connector that’s been kinked for ten years. A vent pipe that’s 80% blocked with lint. We don’t just swap boxes — we address what we find. That takes time but it’s the right call.

Missing components. The right power cord, the water supply line, the anti-tip bracket. If a homeowner doesn’t have these and we need to source them, that’s a delay. We stock the most common items, but not everything.

How to Prepare for a Faster Install

1. Clear the path. Give us a straight shot from the front door to the installation location. Remove floor rugs, push furniture back. This alone saves 10–15 minutes.

2. Have the right cord. Dryers especially — know if your outlet is 3-prong or 4-prong before the installer arrives. If you’re buying a new dryer from a big box store, purchase the matching cord at the same time.

3. Know where your shutoffs are. For dishwashers, ice makers, and washing machines — know where the water shutoff is. If we have to hunt for it, that’s wasted time.

4. Pull out the old unit if you can. We’ll handle the full removal if needed, but if you can unplug it and slide it out before we arrive, that speeds things up.

5. Have the model number ready. If we need to reference specs for vent sizing or electrical requirements, having the model number accessible is faster than tracking it down.
